THE NAQSHBANDI ORDER: INTRODUCTION, DISTINCTIVE FEATURES, AND TERMINOLOGY

Abstract

The Naqshbandi Order is one of the most influential and widespread Sufi orders in the Islamic world. It traces its spiritual lineage to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, which distinguishes it from many other Sufi paths. The order is named after Khwaja Baha-ud-Din Naqshband (d. 1389), who systematized its teachings in Central Asia. One of the main distinguishing features of the Naqshbandi order is its emphasis on silent (khafi) remembrance of God, as opposed to the loud (jahri) dhikr practiced by many other Sufi orders. The Naqshbandiyya strongly stress strict adherence to the Sharia (Islamic law) and the Sunnah of the Prophet, considering inner spirituality inseparable from outward religious practice. Another key characteristic is the principle of “being outwardly with people and inwardly with God,” encouraging followers to remain socially active rather than withdrawing from the world. The Naqshbandi path is based on a set of spiritual principles which guide the seeker toward self-purification and constant awareness of God. These include vigilance of the heart, control of the ego, mindfulness of time, and continuous remembrance. Entry into the order requires sincere repentance, commitment to Islamic ethics, obedience to a qualified spiritual guide (shaykh), and consistency in spiritual practices۔ Through its balanced approach combining spirituality, discipline, and social responsibility.
